Sorry, no dice Jirai. This is a huge finger-pointing over-simplification and is based on some pretty subjective ideas as well about what constitutes a "reward" in EVE.
The beauty of EVE, imo, is that it's a well-designed game that allows for folks with a variety of different ideas about what constitutes a "reward" to set goals for themselves and achieve those "rewards" for themselves within a very broad game and community of players. Fairly often when "reward" (as in low-risk/high-reward) is spoken of by "knowledgeable authorities" on these forums it is almost exclusively done in the context of ISK. Isk is the default EVE game "reward" they seem to sagaciously imply. Meaning no disrespect, that is complete bull sh!t and, imo, it does a disservice to new players.
EVE allows for the enjoyment of a wide-variety of "rewards" or "winning". Many folks do play with one of their main personal "rewards" being the efficient accumulation of a large amount of isk. Others play with their main "reward" being social interaction and team work with others. Or the "reward" of RPing a space-based game. Or the "reward" of being a competent and successful pilot. Or the "reward" of being behind the steering wheel of a capital ship. On and on it goes.
I've read some players enjoyment mainly comes from mining. This is their "reward". It's not one for me. I find mining monotonous and dull unless I'm doing it with a group in low-sec. Then it's a "reward" because there is a rush from the possibility that you will be attacked (like General Coochie did us) and have the opportunity to defend yourself. Other's don't consider mining a "reward" because it is not as profitable isk-wise as other activities they can do. It's all subjective and when folks post statements that imply it's not they demonstrate a poor grasp of what makes this game so diverse and engaging for so many different types of people.
I find that living low-sec is low-risk/high-reward as do all my corp-mates.
The risk in any game for me is that I will become bored or the game will feel too predictable and living in low-sec means that I face a low-risk of boredom or predictability. For me the "rewards" are high because I want to learn the game quickly and the low-sec environment pushes your need to learn quickly, be in situations that demand working well as a team with others, a much more balanced PvP system than most MMOs and a large amount of freedom to do whatever I want (ie: attack other players ).
The reason that low-sec is less populated then high-sec is NOT because of pirates. It is because a large number of players equate building fat wallets with "reward" or losing few ships as a "reward" or using implants for faster skill training as their "reward". That's fine. Those play styles are completely valid. Low-sec is for a different play-style. It's less populated because apparently there are fewer of us that find what it offers "rewarding".
To Zimjin. If you want to get the most out of EVE, define for yourself what constitutes a "reward" in this game and then pursue it. Don't wait for it to come to you and don't let forum "authorities" define it for you. EVE does not work that way. If better PvP is your "reward" then stow those damn mining lasers in your hangar and get on down here. The PvP in low-sec EVE is damn good imo. But you have to find it and make it happen. Best of luck to you.
